RESULTS, AllSaints regatta

On the night between Friday and Saturday we had 15mm of light snow on the ice.
In the morning there was great wind but it stopped just before 10 o'clock start.
Luckily after 2 hours wind picked up and we started to sail.
On Sunday morning temperature was minus 19 degrees and calm. We all packed our
boats on started to drive back to home in nice sunny weather.

Final results are here: Winner is Timo Lehmuskallio but concratulations for all the
participants. Season is started now and next race after 3 weeks in Vaasa region.

K11 here
watching Vikajarvi with interest?

Northern finland is a f*cking long way, even for us brits, it takes us 24 hours at least to get to middle of germany, plus the return trip, so even thinking about ice sailing in sweden or finland is almost one week away maybe for only a few hours on the ice. It comes down to "browny points" an english thing that has something to do with the wife and that job list that appears at home. that ofcourse must be completed before you can go ice sailing!!!!.
better wait till ther is "good ice"    problem with the wife "Jill" is thet she sufferes from reynards disease, hands and feet go very cold in "cold" weather. fully wrapped she is fine, but hanging about waiting at the launch site????   Good luck to those that made the journey, Have drink in the sauna for the brits?   regards k11   talk later k11
watching the vikajarvi reagtta with interest.

No wind on Friday

Wind was extremely light today and we were not able make any race starts today despite of good ice.
Occasionally some wind allowed sailing and some used that for fun and testing
the runners. Also lot and good discussions on the beach kept the spirit up.
For tomorrow it is better forecast.
After races we took a smoke sauna and a cool swim in the lake (hole in the ice).
Here is some pictures from today.
We have a very low interconnection speed here in the north and I am limited to post
large and many pictures, sorry.

Hi, report from Vikajärvi Memorial event

We started to drive from Helsinki Wed. at 17.00.  After Tornio there were twice reindeers on the road -
a remark that we arrived to Lapland. Temperature were still on +2 degrees. We arrived lake Jerisjärvi at 5 in the morning and temperature had drops down to -4 degrees. After taking few hours of sleep we went to shore to see the ice. Nice, it was black and no snow. Careful check revealed that there was ice all over about 9 cm. Black surface but little air bubbles in the surface. Anyway very good ice.
So, just put the boats on the ice. Before noon there were little wind and we were sailing. Afternoon wind
stopped. There were 7 boats on the ice.
Later in the evening more ice sailors started to arrive. We had nice sauna on the beach and dinner.
Tomorrow we try to sail Johnny Köhler cup. Wind forecast is low but let's hope for at least little wind. Lake is great and scenery is magnificent, among the sunshine and the mountains.

Re: Vikajärvi memorial regatta Lake Jerisjärvi - UPDATE
« Reply #5 on: November 15, 2011, 11:58:36 AM »

Dear Friends,

As planned we arrange the race in Lake Jerisjärvi. There is today clear ice with only millimeters of powder snow.
However, next night weather forecast says rain or snow front is going over from west to east. Temperatures is
expected to go up to +2 degrees. So we will see during tomorrow how it goes. Follow this site tomorrow.
Me and Timo (L-103) are on the ice very early Thursday morning.

So we hope for nice weather and successful sailing on the next days.

Accommodation is arranged in Hotel Jeris. They have for us 60m2 or 70m2 villas with own sauna. Price
per villa, and about 25 eur/pers. We can eat breakfast at the hotel for 6 eur.
We have booked 4 villas for icesailors.
Contact information for the hotel is:
Hotelli Jeris[/size]Address: Jerisjärventie 91, 99300 MuonioTel. +358 400 177 600

Hello,

Good news. There is now ice in lake Jerisjärvi and nearby lakes. Ice is today strong enough
to carry a man (about 4 cm). And based on weather forecast we believe ice is strong
enough for the race in planned days.
We have decided to sail Vikajärvi Memorial regatta  in Muonio, Lake Jerisjärvi.
We will drive north during Wednesday and we will be on the ice the on Thursday for
final check.

More detail information on hotels (or accommodation) and detail place for landing the
boats will be informed in coming days. So follow this site daily!

Welcome to start icesailing,

Hello,

As many of you are starting to ask about the race here is information.
Unfortunately the weather has been very warm.  Therefore the original site Painua can
not be the place. We have looked at ice from more north, lake Jerisjärvi, near Muonio
is now our main target, but there are other optional lakes too.
Today there is no ice in Jerisjärvi, but the air is now on the minus side. We will check the ice on the weekend
and then inform.
We do not postpone the race and if there is no ice then we will cancel the event.
So please be patient, keep our fingers crossed for cold and we will inform latest on Sunday
about the decision.

You can follow the weather on the site:

Dear Icesailors,

this is an early heads-up message about the season opening Vikajärvi Memorial Regatta which this year is celebrating its 30th  anniversary. This celebration regatta is arranged by the Finnish DN-icesailing association on the 18th to 20th of November. Preliminary venue is at Painuanlahti Bay, Vaala, Northern Finland. On Friday we will sail Johnny Köhler cup and on Saturday and Sunday All Saints regatta. Points accrued in the All Saints regatta qualify for the Finnish ranking list. Traditionally this regatta has attracted a very large, international crowd with the best of the best sailors. As this year is a special anniversary we expect a large crowd once again.

Please reserve this anniversary season starting regatta weekend for great sailing in great company. We will issue an official Notice Of Race NOR closer to the actual event.

Think black ice!
